Le Cadeau Vineyard - Featured Winery at Domaine Hudson

Featured Winery:
LE CADEAU VINEYARD, WILLAMETTE VALLEY, OREGON

Wine making in the Willamette Valley, and in all of Oregon, is predominately artisanal
or handcrafted with an eye toward creating world class wines. Oregon wines are also special because
the wine industry itself created a state labeling law to safeguard quality with standards that are much higher than the national standard. These are the strictest wine labeling laws in the United States
and Le Cadeau is no exception to these standards.

All of Le Cadeau’s wines are produced exclusively from estate-grown fruit. The vineyard sits near
the top of a hill in the Southwest corner of the Chehalem Mountains, offering diverse slope aspects including extremely rocky soils. Carefully selected grape clones give their Pinot Noir wines their
distinct personality. The result is a diverse but unified collection of exceptional Oregon wines that showcase the range of Le Cadeau Vineyard and the varietal nuances of Pinot Noir.

$55.00

Le Cadeau’s Diversité bottling captures a whiff or two of funk and earth. The tannic, stem flavors seem appropriate wrapped around black fruits and earth. Barrel aging brings in highlights of roasted coffee beans and bitter chocolate, though it quickly fades.

Elio Grasso - Featured Winery at Domaine Hudson

Featured Winery:
ELIO GRASSO ESTATE, MONTEFORT D’ALBA, ITALY

Currently, the Elio Grasso estate has a productive vineyard holding of 18 hectares. The cellar uses only estate-grown grapes from varieties traditionally grown, with excellent results, in the Langhe hill country near Alba. Reflecting the imprint of the vineyard where the fruit was grown in order to give our wines their unique personality is the goal that we – myself, my wife Marina and our son, Gianluca – strive to achieve, with the invaluable assistance of our consultant wine technician, Piero Ballario. We believe that to be acknowledged first as grape farmers, and then as wine producers, is the best way to honour, and continue the labours of, those who have faced before us the challenges that working with nature and her products, like wine, entails. This, and a desire to be true to ourselves, prompts us propose, without presumption, the convictions and conduct shared by all Langhe farming families, characteristics worth preserving and which we believe make the difference.

Listed below are the wines we are featuring at our upcoming wine maker’s dinner with Gian Luca Grasso on June 14, 2015. These wines will be for sale at the dinner as well. See our website for more details or call the restaurant at 302-655-9463

Educato '13 a Langhe Chardonnay from Elio Grasso

Elio GrassoLanghe ChardonnayEducato '13

$28.00

The Langhe Chardonnay is produced from estate grown grapes grown on 1 hectare of land on the Grasso estate. Only 7000 bottles are produced each year. The average of the chardonnay grape vines is 24 years. After harvesting within the first 10 days of September the grapes are vinified in French oak and then further aged in French Oak to produce this beatiful Chardonnay.

Dei Grassi '14 a Dolcetto d'Alba from Elio Grasso

Elio GrassoDolcetto d'AlbaDei Grassi '14

$22.00

“Elio Grasso remains the most under-appreciated of Piedmont’s top growers. Make no mistake about it, these wines can easily hold their own with the best from the region. When one factors in price, these are easily some of the finest ageworthy wines on the planet.” -Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media.

According to Gianluca Grasso “Lighter styled because of the cooler vintage but it’s just the way I like it”. Fresh and tart on the nose with a little earthy and floral spice, and nice green peppercorn note. Decidedly medium light bodied in the mouth, fresh and immediately delicious, this is lovely with lightly earthy red fruit, soft tannins, fine cleansing acidity. Uncomplicated yet gulpable and absolutely full of lightly plummy and red cherry fruits and a soft green herbal edge, this is irresistible.

Vigna Martina '12 a Barbera d'Alba from Elio Grasso

Elio GrassoBarbera d'AlbaVigna Martina '12

$38.00

The Vigna Martina is a vineyard that is located near Elio Grasso’s finest Barolo vineyards, and is tended with great care to produce a rich, round Barbera. This Barbera is handled like a Barolo in the winery, with extended maceration, then aged for 15 months in equal parts new and once used oak barrels, and finally aged in bottle an additional 6 months before release. It ranks with the very finest Barbera’s in the Piedmont.

a Langhe Nebbiolo '14 from Elio Grasso

Elio GrassoLanghe Nebbiolo '14

$30.00

Elio Grasso is one of the best producers of Barolo. His estate, a beautiful house and cellar surrounded by improbably steep vineyards, is outside the town of Monforte, on the eastern side of the Barolo appellation. Elio works mostly in the vineyards, increasingly leaving the cellar work to his son Gianluca, who recently graduated from the enology school in Alba. The Gavarini vineyard is wholly owned by the Grassos. It produces this elegant, value-priced red. A dead ringer for a fine Barolo, and offered at a fraction of the price.

Runcot '08 a Barolo Riserva from Elio Grasso

Elio GrassoBarolo RiservaRuncot '08

$177.00

95 points Antonio Galloni
The 2008 Barolo Riserva Runcot is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty. Smoke, tar, licorice, menthol, plums and spices form a tapestry of undeniable class. The sweet, perfumed fruit typical of the 2008s here is evident in the glass. A rich, sumptuous wine, the 2008 Runcot is fabulous. The 2008 spent 45 months in new French oak, all of which it has handled with superb grace. Even though the Runcot is one of the few Barolos that handles new French oak this well, once again I wonder what it might taste like if aged like the rest of the Grasso Barolos. Dark red/black fruit, spices, new leather and smoke add the last nuances of complexity. (Antonio Galloni) (1/2014)

93 points Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar
Good full, deep red. Deeply pitched aromas of red berries, mocha, violet and dried flowers, with a suggestion of roasted plum. Big, plush and very ripe but also classically dry, with subtle floral, spice and licorice flavors complemented but not overshadowed by deep oak. Finishes very long and spicy, with a repeating note of roasted plum and building sweetness. (11/2013)

Ginsetra Casa Mate '11 a Barolo from Elio Grasso

Elio GrassoBaroloGinsetra Casa Mate '11

$105.00

Among the most successful wines of the 2011 vintage we find the two Baroli of Elio Grasso. Given the attentive viticultural approach demanded by the conditions, it is no surprise to note the successes registered here. Gianluca joined his father in the family business upon completely enology school in Alba in the early 2000s. His involvement has been a blessing on two counts; his skill and talent in the winery have improved the quality of the wines dramatically and in turn this allows his father, Elio, to focus where he excels: the vineyard.

The 2011 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Casa Matè has retained greater freshness than the Gavarini. At the same time, the flavors are dark, bold and intense throughout, with gorgeous balsamic-inflected overtones that add nuance. In 2011, with sugars mounting, Gianluca Grasso chose to pick the Ginestra before the Gavarini, which is not the norm here. As a result, the tannins are a bit dry and austere by today’s standards, although in prior decades plenty of Barolos were made with tannins that weren’t fully ripe. However, the flavors retain gorgeous brightness, tension and energy throughout, all of which makes me think the 2011 will come together over time.
