Well the first question to answer is why would you NOT have wine displayed? Simply put, displaying wine is BAD for it.
There are many environmental factors that affect how wine ages. Air temperature above 70 degrees causes wine to “cook” and for the flavors and aromas to become flat. Wine stored below 45 degrees (like in a refrigerator) can damage wine too. This is mostly because at refrigerator temperatures, the humidity is low and the cork will dry out allowing air into the bottle.
Humidity….humidity plays an important role in how the cork preserves the wine. The ideal humidity for wine is at 70%. If the humidity is higher, the cork may mold and much lower it will dry the cork out. Lower humidities take a long time to dry out a cork but if you have that expensive bottle that needs to be stored for years, this is an important aspect of proper wine storage. Finally light especially, UV rays damages wine. This is why wine is bottle in dark glass.
So why are there no bottles on display at Domaine Hudson? Because we want the wine you order for your special occasion to be the best it can be, we take our wine storage seriously. All of our wines are stored in our climate controlled cellar or our wine refrigerators behind the bar. Each glass comes to you in its best condition. Because your enjoyment of that bottle of wine is so important to us….from each and every one of our wines by the glass to that 2005 Bordeaux, there are no, and I mean zero, bottles of wine out in the open.
